MEET THE DESIGNER

"We create prototypes of the designs we find appealing, engage in constructive criticism, and ultimately generate the final product."

Umut Akar, FAST FORWARD FUTURE
MINI INTERVIEW

What's your design philosophy?
I design what I feel and I question the rules a lot, and if I don't agree with them, I design the way I feel.

Who are your design influences?
My design inspiration stems from both other people and nature.

What's your process for designing a new collection?
First, I identify a theme based on events that are crucial for nearly all living things and require contemporary discussion. Subsequently, I conduct research on the chosen subject. Once determined, I communicate these topics to my designers, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. Following this, I assess their work, providing feedback on areas where they are on the right track and indicating corrections where necessary. Next, we create prototypes of the designs we find appealing, engage in constructive criticism, and ultimately generate the final product.

How important is sustainability in your designs?
It holds significant importance as the second most polluting industry globally. However, I refrain from relying on current greenwashing certificates. For instance, even if a t-shirt is crafted from organic cotton, purchasing it for a mere 10 dollars may lead to its disposal after just two days. The prevailing pricing techniques seem fundamentally flawed. Consequently, I approach my designs not merely as products but as perceptions. Investing 100 or 1000 dollars in a product should discourage immediate disposal.

How do you see the future of fashion?
The future will never unfold uniformly, resembling futuristic movies or conventional ideas. Stereotypical notions will diminish in significance as awareness grows. I believe the future will be characterized by greater vibrancy, increased digitization, and heightened boldness.
