How do you handle the business side of fashion design?
This is such an interesting question because actually I ended up in the realm of the business of fashion handbags. In all honesty, I had absolutely no clue what I was doing hence how I ended up there however, now I handle it with a lot of girth, alongside a state of intuitive, feeling and a massive learning and 10+ years experience behind me. Any business is tough and I believe the most important thing is to understand your numbers, however, when your numbers are not necessarily making sense, there needs to be an understanding of the market and a clarity on what your product can bring. What solution? So business can never stand alone and neither can a creative, and what I’ve learned is because I’m a creative, you always need a partner that can either make up for that lack of business understanding or learn whatever is missing in that gap of understanding for you to be successful.
And so how do I handle the business side of fashion? I never stop learning. So I never stop asking, and that’s how I grow.
What’s your design philosophy?
My design philosophy is pretty simple. It’s: How am I feeling? And from that feeling, define the problem, and from that problem, find a solution. My Grandad who I’m very close to always says “Every problem comes with it’s own solution, you just have to find it” as a highly intuitive person, I let the problem-solving aspect lead me in design, and often in life too.
How do you handle creative block?
Another funny one, if I have a creative block, then I dwell on it. I face it, - since I design from emotion, if I’m creatively blocked, that’s my sign to go be free, live, rebel, love and enjoy and come back to tell my story, that’s where I find the root of my creativity. In the pit of life’s belly.
What’s your favourite fashion city?
I can’t pick it’s a close call between Paris and New York.
What’s your favourite colour to work with?
Black. And not only because it’s my real middle name, but I think it’s the most beautiful deep, rich and understated best colour/ non- colour to exist. If I had to only design for only my wardrobe, it’d be black - for sure.
