How did you become interested in jewelry design?
I was a young fashion designer from Japan when, out of curiosity, I took a jewelry studio class at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. I was fascinated by the malleability of silver—how it melts beautifully when exposed to heat, can be shaped into various forms, and hardens as it cools. That was about 25 years ago, and I’ve been hooked on jewelry ever since! Designing and handcrafting jewelry became a form of art therapy for me, and it’s one of my greatest passions.
What's the most important thing you've learned about creating a jewelry brand?
The most important things I've learned in my jewelry business journey, especially through the pandemic, are the incredible power of transformation, positive thinking, dedication, and commitment. Major life changes—such as marriage, loss, or divorce—often inspire us to reevaluate our goals, seek new opportunities, and embark on paths of personal growth and independence. By shedding self-limiting beliefs and pushing beyond our limitations, just as a snake sheds its skin, we can unlock our potential and create something beautiful.
How do you stay inspired?
I stay inspired by regularly practicing yoga and meditation, which help me remain calm, happy, and positive. These practices keep my mind clear and focused, allowing me to channel my creativity into my jewelry designs.
What's your favorite project you've ever worked on?
My favorite projects have been handcrafting custom rings of love. One memorable project involved upcycling a grandma's pear-shaped diamond from the 1920s into a modern, minimalist engagement ring. Another special project was designing an open ring, my signature design, with two gemstones—ruby and peridot—for a husband to gift to his wife. Both projects were sentimental and lovely, allowing me to create meaningful and unique pieces.
What's the most important accessory in a wardrobe?
The most important accessories in my wardrobe are definitely my handmade jewelry. Each piece brings me joy and strength, adding a unique touch to any outfit. I also love hats—they're a fantastic way to express personal style!
