"I love to think about timeless gorgeousness, functionality, and non-seasonality when I create."

Nonye Goodie-Obi, NONNISTICS FASHION
MINI INTERVIEW

How did you become interested in fashion design?
I love seeing beautifully dressed people - men, women, and children. I love the gorgeousness I see on the red carpets. I love celebrity looks, and I love the easy, breezy but stylish street styles. I entered fashion through retailing. I was traveling to Turkey and New York to buy ready-made clothes to sell in Lagos, Nigeria, but I always struggled to find unique, quality pieces that were also affordable. I often shared design ideas with the store owners and managers to improve my chances of getting what I’d really like the next time I shopped. I did this for a few months, and it dawned on me that I should just create my own pieces. I took that step, and I'm here today.

What's your design philosophy?
I love to maneuver fabrics. I love constructions. I love working with the human body and bringing out hidden beauty. I love boosting confidence, especially in women who feel less beautiful because of their body shapes and sizes. In all of this, I love creating timeless pieces. I always believe money is hard-earned, and my creations must transcend trends and offer timeless value to the consumer. In essence, my design philosophy is a fusion of timeless elegance, simplicity, and a deep respect for cultural and personal values, resulting in garments that are luxurious, versatile, and dignified.

Who are your design influences?
As a fashion designer, my work is deeply influenced by a blend of iconic figures and personal beliefs. I have always been inspired by Carolina Herrera for her timeless elegance and versatility in the use of fabrics. Her ability to create pieces that are both sophisticated and adaptable resonates with my vision of designing garments that exude grace and refinement. Coco Chanel's simplicity and luxurious approach to design have also greatly impacted my style. Her innovative techniques and emphasis on comfort without sacrificing elegance are principles I strive to incorporate into my own creations. Beyond these iconic influences, my designs are profoundly shaped by my respect for women and my cultural belief in modesty. This perspective drives me to create pieces that celebrate modesty without compromising on style and beauty. I always aim to design clothing that honors the dignity of women, blending elegance and sophistication in a way that is both respectful and empowering.

What's your favorite material to work with?
I work with all fabrics. However, solid color fabrics give me the freedom to construct whatever my mind can conceive because they are not restrictive, unlike laces. I find silk, cashmere, velvet, and leather great for my luxurious creations. In addition, I also create timelessly gorgeous pieces with other fabrics such as crepe, organza, linen, and cotton.

How do you choose colors for your designs?
I love to think about timeless gorgeousness, functionality, and non-seasonality when I create. This is because I believe in giving my customers real value for their money. So, I work with black, white, red, and all hues of green and blue. I also work with nude because it’s a base color that can be transformed into anything with embellishments. In choosing from these colors, I also consider skin tones, my target audience, and the functionality of the design.
