Dames, founded in New York by designer Mary Katlyn O’Malley, aims to empower women to feel confident and safe on the streets. O’Malley started the brand to provide women with fierce fashion choices without the fear of harassment or assault. With sharp silhouettes and street-smart designs, Dames offers self-defense charms like rape whistles and stun guns to ensure women's safety. O’Malley's message to New York's young women: be free, be cool, and stand strong.
MKO: "I created DAMES so women could be safe and sexy at the same time."
“I want to build a community where women of all races can communicate and ... continue to support and take care of each other. I want to give women a space to feel their own strength and tell their stories. That is power.” - Beyoncé

How did you become interested in fashion design?
I've always been interested in fashion, clothes, and style. I've often pondered how I could choose a costume for my avatar and become anyone. Before COVID, I traveled to 100 countries and collected numerous clothing pieces from all over the world. After losing my job due to COVID, I simply started experimenting and learning as I went along. Creating things became incredibly inspiring to me. #zerowaste
What's your design philosophy?
I suppose my design philosophy revolves around the concept of choosing our avatars. What we wear carries significant meaning. I aim for women to feel secure and actually be safe. I established my brand during the COVID-19 pandemic, prompted by the tragic death of a young woman in my neighborhood, which left me feeling uneasy. Safety encompasses both internal and external aspects. Mental well-being holds immense importance. Being fully present and alert is crucial for self-protection. Achieving presence requires effort. I created Dames as a means to aid myself and hope to establish a platform to share this support with others.
What do you think are the most important skills for a fashion designer?
Resilience and grit, along with the support I received by embracing release.
How do you handle criticism of your designs?
The Four Agreements: 'Be impeccable with your word,' 'Do not take anything personally,' 'Do not make assumptions,' and 'Always do your best’.
What's your favorite type of clothing to design?
I appreciate both sexy and safe. Witnessing women embody strength, empowerment, and fearlessness brings me joy. Recognizing the vital role women play as the creators of life, we are all divine beings. The essence of both the Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine resides within each of us.
