Mathilde Covelli , MAHAUD PARIS
MINI INTERVIEW

How did you become interested in fashion design?
I first became interested in fashion through my mother and her fashion magazines. That was the moment I knew I wanted to become a fashion designer. What immediately struck me about the creations of my favorite designers (John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier) was how their designs and shows told stories. I dreamed of being able to walk down the street dressed like that. I told myself that I, too, wanted to tell stories through my creations—that one day, I would put on my own show, inspire dreams, and evoke emotions through my designs. That’s exactly what I hope to achieve today with Mahaud Paris.

What's the most challenging aspect of being a fashion designer?
I think the most challenging part is not getting lost in your ideas, not losing sight of the main concept, and not becoming overly perfectionistic. I love perfectionism—it’s essential in our work because it drives us to pay attention to every detail. However, it can also be a flaw, as you need to know when to put a final touch on a creation in order to move on to the next one. There’s always the temptation to perfect it further, to refine every little detail even more. Sometimes, you have to tell yourself, “I’ll save this idea, this detail, or this improvement for another creation,” and move forward.

What's your favorite thing about being a fashion designer?
What I love most as a fashion designer is seeing the ideas swirling in my head come to life. They gradually take shape before my eyes, transform, and evolve into a superior version of the initial concept. I also cherish watching my entire team work tirelessly to bring these ideas to reality. There’s something beautiful about seeing so many people dedicate countless hours, precision, and passion to a single piece. When a piece is finally finished, it’s already filled with so much emotion—it becomes a little treasure, our little treasure, before it’s shared with others and turns into someone else’s treasure, someone else’s dream.

How important is sustainability in your designs?
Eco-responsibility has been a core value of the brand since its inception and is an integral part of our concept. During my final year project, I delved deeper into the work of Martin Margiela, who became a major inspiration for the creation of Mahaud Paris. His approach to reworking and transforming everyday objects into unique pieces—sometimes even works of art—deeply resonated with me. It aligned perfectly with my vision of fashion and what I aspire to create. Working with socks and tights in my designs has opened up endless creative possibilities and material challenges. Additionally, we make a conscious effort to use recycled materials, particularly in our jewelry, and we preserve all fabric scraps for patchwork or future transformations. We also keep the option open to recycle some of our unsold pieces, giving them a new life.

How important is collaboration in fashion design?
I believe collaborations are essential because they bring a fresh perspective, new challenges, and valuable knowledge. In my opinion, they sometimes reveal dimensions we hadn't initially perceived. It’s also like embarking on a new adventure—learning to work with someone else and understanding their art from within. It’s the meeting of two creative worlds that must learn to create together. These encounters are rich in emotions and stories, and the stronger the bond between artists, the more extraordinary the creations become.
