"I stay inspired by staying connected - to the land, to my heritage, and to the places and people that have shaped my journey."

Almeta Dellagnolo, Babaloo Jewelry
MINI INTERVIEW

What's your favorite material to work with?

Although I love creating with many natural materials, my favorite material to work with would have to be feathers. They carry both symbolic and aesthetic power; light, intricate, and full of movement, feathers bring a sense of life and spirit to each piece. In many Indigenous cultures feathers hold deep cultural meaning. I love how they allow me to create pieces that feel both rooted in tradition and elevated in style, delicate yet bold, natural yet refined. Working with feathers is a way to weave story, heritage, and beauty into every design.

How important is sustainability in your designs?

I have a deep respect and awe for nature; she is truly the most exquisite artist. It is my goal to create designs that reflect that beauty while respecting it. I source my materials ethically whenever possible and reduce waste wherever I can. Artisan pieces are meant to last; they are the antithesis of fast fashion.

How do you balance creativity with wearability in your designs?

Balancing creativity with wearability is at the heart of every design. I’m inspired by bold forms, rich textures, and the stories materials can tell—but I always consider how a piece will feel and move when worn. Each design is thoughtfully crafted to be both visually striking and comfortable, allowing the wearer to feel adorned without being overwhelmed. It's a balance of art and intention, grounded in both beauty and practicality.

How do you stay inspired?

I stay inspired by staying connected - to the land, to my heritage, and to the places and people that have shaped my journey. As a Nez Perce artist, nature is a constant source of creativity, the movement of birds, the texture of bark, the shimmer of water. Travel also plays a big role; having lived in Canada, Europe, and now back home, I draw from a tapestry of cultural experiences that continue to influence my perspective. Babaloo Jewelry reflects all these layers - ever evolving yet deeply rooted.

How do you handle the business side of fashion design?

Let’s just say I’m much more at home with feathers and beads than with spreadsheets and budgets! The business side of fashion design is definitely a challenge for me. I’m learning as I go, one invoice and inventory sheet at a time. It’s not always glamorous, but I remind myself it’s all part of bringing the creative vision to life… preferably with strong coffee in hand!
